If you’re like most small business owners, you’re probably bombarded with sales calls and emails offering “SEO” services. As a small business owner, you’re an expert in your business, but you’re probably not an expert marketer, and you might not be sure exactly what these companies are trying to sell you. In this article, I’m going to describe the essence of SEO and why it might be important for your business.
SEO = Search Engine Optimization
That’s the basic definition, even though this can mean different things for different business. In short, though, SEO can be summarized as:
Optimizing your web presence so that it’s easier for your customers to find you online.
Now, a few years ago, SEO was pretty simple. You could create a basic website that described your business and people would find you. That still works if you don’t have much competition, but if you’re competing with similar businesses in your city, you’re going to need to do more work to increase your visibility. Currently, there are many different aspects of web optimization that include:
- Local Business Search
- Organic Search
- Social Media
- Paid Advertising (PPC)
- Citation Building
By working on all of these different aspects of your marketing, you’ll build a strong web presence that will make it easier for customers to find your business and make more money. In future blog posts, we’ll discuss each of these aspects of your online marketing campaign and we’ll explain how they work.
